Raising A Sports Fanatic is a great book for anyone who loves sports. The perfect gift for that someone who loves sports and has everything. A great stocking stuffer or birthday gift. Perfect for Mother's and/or Father's Day. A wonderful gift for the expecting parent. Comical even to the non-sports fan.
Sports Without Pressure by Eric Marbenau The value of sports, psychologically as well as physically, is clearly spelled out here from psychologist Margenau's view point. The dangers, explained with the use of case histories, should make every parent and coach take a look at the way young people are pressured, both internally and externally, in sports settings. Young peo ple in the United States, says Margenau, are in danger of becoming one-dimensional sports robots; there is a need for play in every child's development, but at about age 12 talented youngsters and their families must decide whether sports will be pursued in a recreational or professional way. Mar genau presents important guidelines to help parents and coaches make the right deci sions for children.--Kenneth G. Tillman, Trenton State Coll., N.J.

Get Your Children Reading With These Great Books
Kid's In Sports From School Library Journal Grade 3-6 - These brief, introductory books are highly appealing and will inspire reluctant readers. Each one focuses on four amazing people who either defeated incredible odds or accomplished record-breaking feats. For example, Kidsfeatures gymnast Nadia Comaneci; a double amputee who completed a triathlon; a six-year-old karate competitor, and a 12-year-old sportscaster. Limits features a marathon runner, an Iditarod racer, a triathlon competitor, and a female weight lifter. Record Breakers includes Gertrude Ederle, the first woman to swim the English Channel; and Mark McGwire, who broke the home-run record for a single season. Odds chronicles Wilma Rudolph's triumph over polio and Lance Armstrong's battle with cancer. The texts feature a fair balance of women, minorities, disabled athletes, children, and current and past champions. The stories are triumphant and realistic at the same time. The books have an attractive design, with numerous color and black-and-white photos and an uncluttered layout. These titles will attract readers who are not quite ready for a full-length biography or the more advanced "Sports Illustrated for Kids" books. - Kristen Oravec, Cuyahoga County Public Library, Strongsville, OH

Wrestling by Christin Ditchfield
Snowboarding by Larry Dane Brimner School Library Journal Gr 4-6In this significant revision of the 1989 title, the author discusses history, equipment, etiquette, technique, and injury-avoidance behavior for this fast-growing sport. Highlighted sections that deal with terminology and different types of snowboards are new to this edition and should prove useful to both report writers and beginning practitioners. A strong chapter on etiquette reminds readers that snowboarding has had a long and difficult road to acceptance and that self-monitoring of behavior is necessary if snowboarders want to continue to be welcomed on the slopes. Discussion of technique is fairly rudimentary but does not include the advice that participation in the sport should be preceded by a session with a qualified instructor. Well-reproduced, full-color photographs, listings of organizations, magazines, books, and Internet resources round out this solid effort that is comparable to any number of recently published instructional books on the subject for this age group.Richard Luzer, Fair Haven Union High School, VT
